To honour this year's Human Rights Day, Ekvilib Institute in cooperation with SPP Institute for the Promotion of Photography invites you to participate in the international photo contest 2009: Global World: Through the Lens of Human Rights.

The honorary patroness of the contest is Dr. Zdenka Čebašek Travnik, human rights ombudsman of the Republic of Slovenia.

The Ekvilib Institute is launching a new initiative Global World: Through the Lens of Human Rights, which promotes socially responsible use of photography as a tool for protecting and promoting human rights, and expressing a critical outlook on global social developments and processes.

Topic 2009: The topic of this year’s contest are economic, social and cultural rights, which, in spite of massive violations, are still being neglected in human rights debates and are often represented in ways that lead to stereotypes and generalizations.

With this year’s topic we want to translate local and global development challenges into the language of human rights, and emphasize that the basics necessary for a dignified life, such as access to safe drinking water, food, education, adequate housing, healthcare, social security and decent work, are fundamental human rights guaranteed by international human rights documents, voluntarily signed and ratified by majority of world’s countries.

The photo contest is intended to deal both with human rights violations, as well as their realisation, with the emphasis on economic, social and cultural rights in the context of global development efforts.

Prize for the winning photo or photo story: Reimbursement of travel and living expenses in a chosen developing country in the total amount of 1.000 EUR, with established contacts with Ekvilib Institute’s partner organisations working in the field of human rights in the chosen country.

Who can participate: both professional photographers and other interested individuals, who share the vision and passion to contribute to a more just and balanced global development, and to a socially responsible representation of global development challenges.
